KAITLYN'S FIRST HAIRCUT...

Kaitlyn’s first haircut… What an experience… And it all happened by complete accident – well kind of…

I haven’t made a secret of the fact I am not a fan of the mullet look on my beautiful little baby. Yet at everyone’s insistence I have held out hope that it would soon fall out.

So let me set the scene… This week we have battled the heat and Kaitlyn has been a little unsettled during the day, finding it difficult to get comfortable. One source of distraction working particularly well at the moment is to have her sitting at the computer. Not sure what it is, but she loves watching the screen (especially media player) and if I start typing away, she will bang her little hands along with me.

So there we were, sitting and typing and I noticed Kaitlyn had a little something in her hair. I tried pulling it out, but it wouldn’t give so I thought it best to get the scissors out and cut it off. Now I am not sure what exactly possessed me at this point, but I decided that perhaps I could trim the mullet to give it a little finesse.

That’s all I really have to say about that, as from there it all went bad and basically, I was a terrible mother for being unable to put the scissors down. What remained was nothing short of a haircut nightmare, so, racked with guilt, I went to see my Mum for some much needed consolation. On her inspection she decided we needed to seek professional advice, so we dropped into the hairdressers to see what could be done.

I was quite embarrassed walking in there having to admit what I have attempted the impossible – improving the mullet look. But the hairdresser didn’t bat an eye lid; she threw on a tiny little cape for Kaitlyn (it was so cute) and removed what was left of the mullet entirely. So now, our little girl looks a little more on the bald side… (And I think a little cuter too).

In other exciting developments, we started Kaitlyn on her first real food this week. We have made up some Farex (rice cereal) for the last three days, and although the majority of it ends up either all over her face, on her clothes (or on me) she seems to be enjoying it. I just couldn’t take her looking longingly at me every time I was eating, so now she is joining in the fun.

She is also starting in on chewable husks which are good for about a minute, and then she looses interest. If nothing else, she has a strong grip and very good hand eye coordination to keep the thing in her mouth for as long as she does.

This week we also enjoyed a lovely catch up with our good friends, Gen and Ed, and their beautiful baby Sophie. It was actually the first time Gen and Ed had met Kaitlyn which is hard to believe considering she is a full four months old. As usual, Kaitlyn couldn’t keep her eyes off the baby – I think she sits there wondering, “you’re not that bigger than me and you are getting about on your own – why can’t I do that?”

We had a great BBQ swapping baby stories, and wondering what we ever talked about before the babies came along.

Hopefully I can squeeze in one last blog before our trip…
